Symphytum officinale
Comfrey is one of the most valuable herbs known to botanical medicine. Also Known as Knitbone and Boneset, it contains allantoin, a hormone-like substance that stimulates cell division, making comfrey valuable for healing wounds, ulcers and broken bones. Tea and poultices of leaves or roots are used.
Comfreys are nutritional herbs containing iron, magnesium, sulfur, copper, zinc as well as 18 Amino acids. It is a good source of the Amino acid hysine, which is often lacking in diets that contain no animal products. Comfrey feeds the pituitary gland with its natural hormone and helps strengthen the body skeleton . It is an important fodder and green manure crop as well.
Common comfrey is a hardy perennial (USDA Zone 5), with a height and spread of 3 feet. White/ pink/purple flowers bloom in summer.
