Edible berries are borne inside fascinating orange chinese lantern-like calyces. Berries are eaten raw, or in preserves and pies. Recommended for fevers and gout.
Papery lanterns are produced freely on vigorous plants, averaging 18 inchesin height. For winter bouquets, cut the stems in fall just as the lanterns turn color, remove the leaves and hang them to dry in a shady, airy place.
